ASTM A 967

ADOPTION NOTICE

ASTM A 967, "Standard Specification for Chemical Passivation Treatments for Stainless Steel Parts" was adopted on 31 March 1997 for use by the Department of Defense (DoD). Proposed changes by DoD activities must be submitted to the DoD Adopting Activity: Defense Supply Center Richmond, Attn: DSCR-VBD, Richmond, VA 23297-5610. DoD activities may obtain copies of this standard from the Standardization Document Order Desk, 700 Robbins Avenue, Building 4D, Philadelphia, PA 19111-5094. The private sector and other Government agencies may purchase copies from ASTM, 100 Barr Harbor Drive, West Conshohocken, PA 19428-2959.

ASTM A 967 may be used instead of Federal Specification QQ-P-35, "Passivation Treatments for Corrosion-Resistant Steel." QQ-P-35 only covers passivation by the nitric acid processes. ASTM A 967 covers passivation treatments using either nitric acid or citric acid (which is less hazardous and more environmentally acceptable). ASTM A 967 is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee A-1 on Steel, Stainless Steel, and Related Alloys and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee A01.14 on Methods of Corrosion Testing. The current edition was approved on 10 September 1996. QQ-P-35 will be canceled.

FEDERAL SPECIFICATION

PASSIVATION TREATMENT FOR CORROSION-RESISTANT STEEL

Federal Specification QQ-P-35C, dated October 28, 1988, is hereby canceled. This federal specification is superceded by ASTM A 967-96, "Standard Specification for Chemical Passivation Treatments for Stainless Steel Parts", dated 10 September 1996 (DoD Adopted). Copies of ASTM A 967 may be obtained from: ASTM, 100 Barr Harbor Drive, West Conshohocken, PA 19428-2959.

FEDERAL SPECIFICATION

PASSIVATION TREATMENT FOR CORROSION-RESISTANT STEEL

QQ-P-35c, DATED 28 October 1988, is hereby reinstated and may be used for acquisition UNTIL 3 July 1998 at which time it will be canceled. The Defense Industrial Supply Center (IS) herby assumes preparing activity responsibility in lieu of the Defense Supply Center Richmond (GS).

QQ-P-35C, dated 28 October 1988, NOTICE 1 dated 4 APRIL 1997 and NOTICE 2 dated 14 NOVEMBER 1997, are hereby canceled. Future acquisitions for this product should refer to American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) specification ASTM A967, "Standard Specification for Chemical Passivation Treatments for Stainless Steel Parts", or, SAE Aerospace Materials Specification (AMS) AMS-QQ-P-35, "Passivation treatments for Corrosion-Resistant Steel". Aerospace applications require the use of AMS-QQ-P-35.

The above guidance is for DoD activities only and does not apply for non-DoD users. Users are cautioned to evaluate these documents for their particular applications before citing them as a replacement document.
